Rick was very passionate about photography and has trained with some of the best landscape photographers in the country. In December 2007 he was diagnosed with MDS – Refractory Anemia with Ringed Sideroblasts (RARS-T), a bone marrow disorder. It was known the condition had roughly a 30% chance of shifting into Acute Myeloid Leukemia, which it eventually did. Rick enrolled in a clinical trial from August 2010 until December 2020. He was then treated with targeted gene therapy and was able to continue his travels and photography.
He drove 50 times to Seattle from Oregon (700 mile round trip) every 28 days for the first clinical trial. When the clinical trial was moved to MD Anderson in Houston, he moved back to his home state of Colorado to cut down on the travel distance.
After successfully staving off the worst effects of the disease for 15 years, Rick died of Leukemia in March of 2022. Rick left behind thousands of amazing photographs, compiled by his family.
All proceeds from the sales of these images will go towards Brents Place, who provided housing close to the hospital for Rick and Connie while he underwent extensive treatment.
